Meet the Manager Sarah Mainwaring
“Welcome to Romans – if you have any questions or would like to arrange a viewing do call me on 01273 270100 or email ”
My mother was a resident at Romans for more than 5 years. Sadly she died on 8th December at the grand age of 104.
I just wanted to say that as a family we can’t thank the staff enough for the wonderful care and attention she received throughout her stay, especially with all the difficulties Covid brought.
Every single member of staff is cheerful, welcoming and kind. As a team we always found them to be professional and respectful towards each other and the residents but also that mum greatly enjoyed their friendship and company, as did we.
At a very difficult time they were there for us. Mum’s death was made easier because they went out of their way to make her as comfortable as possible, kept us informed and supported us in every way they could think of.
In her last few days we could visit freely regardless of time, were given endless cups of tea with the staff popping in for little chats whenever they could and we saw their genuine concern that mum died peacefully and with dignity.
Lovely people who deserve the recognition of a big THANK YOU.
We look forward to welcoming you to Romans where we have created a caring community for up to 26 people.
The health, safety and wellbeing of people living, visiting or working here is paramount, and we can assure you that your priorities regarding safety, care, cleanliness and enjoyment are ours too.
Free Wi-Fi is available in every room and every shared area of the building. We have increased access to technology, and iPads can be used to support regular video calls, enabling residents to communicate more frequently with their loved ones through Zoom, Teams or Skype …
We are proud to provide a variety of activities online and offline. Our staff and volunteers offer a range of stimulating activities tailored to individual preferences and our monthly calendar is full of events – Gardening Club, Quizzes, Board Games, Arts & Crafts as well as singers and pets as therapy coming to our community. Our Vibrant Community platform enables people living here to stay connected with families and other communities having fun together. We have good connections and support from the local church and volunteers.
Electronic Medication Administration System (E-mar) and Electronic Care Planning (PCS) are in place to guarantee the best quality of care.
The gardens at the front of the building are lined with mature trees, most of which enjoy protected status. The gardens are well-maintained with lawns and flower beds. We love to welcome people in spring and summer as a lot of activities take place in the gardens during these months, and we have a lovely outdoor seating area where our residents love just sitting, chatting and enjoying the sun, or strolling in the grounds. We have two main outdoor areas – the main garden and the peace garden, and in addition an igloo pod which was originally used during the pandemic but now facilitates visits in colder weather when people would like to sit in the garden.
Romans has been a care home since 1957 and was previously run by West Sussex Housing Society. It became part of Keychange in 2011.
Built in the 1930s, Romans was subsequently extended in the 1970s to provide the current facilities. In the 1990s the dining area was extended and subsequently incremental refurbishment has taken place.
Romans is situated in a quiet conservation area of Southwick. The home is close to Southwick Shopping Square where people living here can enjoy a cup of tea or coffee with staff or relatives.
Southwick lies close to the estuary of the River Adur and has its own post-Second World War charm as a holiday resort.
